Memorial Day is a U.S. federal holiday dedicated to honoring and remembering military personnel who died while serving in the Armed Forces.
Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday of May and serves as a solemn occasion to reflect on the sacrifices of fallen soldiers ( Yahoo+2). 
Originally called Decoration Day, it began after the American Civil War when communities decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags to honor those who had died in battle.
